Developing Bilingual Literacy
Nuevos mundos, 4th Edition, is an exciting program for Heritage Spanish speakers, revised to match Vista Higher Learning’s standards for student engagement and online learning. Nuevos mundos engages students with cultural and literary readings as well as video and audio that will excite them about their shared backgrounds, culture, and home language of Spanish.
Activities in print and on the Nuevos mundos Supersite compel students to express themselves in Spanish by working in pairs and groups to discuss their identities, communities, life experiences, and everyday realities with their peers. Online Workbook activities review and develop students’ knowledge of standard written Spanish, allowing them to become stronger readers and writers of the language.
Throughout Nuevos mundos, students learn to value their home language of Spanish and recognize its linguistic worth in the broader Spanish-speaking world. They work towards developing an understanding that bilingual literacy is a valuable skill to have, both personally and professionally, and that with their skills and knowledge, they will be able to contribute to a more inclusive and interconnected global society.
The Hallmarks of Nuevos mundos:
- Designed for Hispanic bilingual students whose home language is Spanish
- Opportunities to develop academic and communicative skills
- Emphasis on reading and communication
- Based on the cultures and voices of the major Hispanic groups in the United States and other Hispanic voices from Spain and Latin America
- Can be used with a variety of instructional approaches: content-based language instruction, theme-based approach, and language across the curriculum
