Protagonistas

An interactive, communicative approach designed with students in mind.

Protagonistas has an interactive, communicative approach designed with students in mind. Its approach to the linguistic aspects of interaction is both communicative and functional-notional. It emphasizes task-driven communication within meaningful, pragmatic contexts of everyday life. The four skills, which are speaking, listening, reading, and writing, are taught through a series of short, interactive activities. In Protagonistas, culture is the content; therefore naturally developing intercultural competency.

The Protagonistas

Each lesson features a protagonist from the Spanish-speaking world to show how Spanish is used in real-world situations. The protagonists provide a personal connection and a practical application for the language.

Functional Contexts

Protagonistas takes an innovative approach to teaching vocabulary. Students learn the words needed in order to complete the communicative task at hand. Vocabulary and structures are presented through short functional contexts, providing vocabulary at point of use to then successfully complete the real-life tasks.

Communicative goals

Communicative goals and functions are summarized at the beginning of each unit so that students know what they will have learned by the end of every lesson.

Intercultural competence

Cultural awareness is the medium through which new vocabulary and grammar are presented and practiced. Every unit synthesizes all of the tasks and contexts presented with Avance, a section containing review strategies and activities or readings, as well as the always engaging Flash cultura cultural video series. This video series provides students with the opportunity to observe and reflect on the products and practices presented. Proyecto asks students to apply oral or written presentation strategies in the context of the literary reading and the unit's cultural themes.

Mi experiencia activities

Mi experiencia activities provide conversation outlines that guide students to use lesson vocabulary and structures for meaningful, personalized communication.

Expanded support for ACTFL standards and interculturality

Throughout the instructor text, standards correlations for specific activities appear on the same page or spread so that you see them at point of use. New annotations include more support for interculturality using a sequence of Investigate, Reflect, and Explain prompts related to cultural content.
