Connect is based on the idea that instruction in language is not separate from the learning of content. The content sections—Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Math, Music, and Art—focus on building academic literacy.
Students can listen to audio recordings of the content-area texts.
Each unit concludes with a Connect to Writing and Connect to Media section, where students apply what they’ve learned. They also revisit the Big Idea and apply their knowledge in a discussion.
In Connect to Writing, a student model helps students learn how to write a variety of writing styles. Process writing steps guide them to complete and present their writing assignments.
Students explore an authentic short film in Connect to Media, and are encouraged to use academic language to discuss the video’s form and content.
Students watch an authentic short film and learn to view media through a critical lens.
