Program Features
Communicative Goals Build Students’ Confidence
Communicative Goals are listed at the beginning of each chapter and highlight the real-life tasks students will be able to carry out in German. They break down each chapter into its two lessons and one Weiter Geht’s section, giving an at-a-glance summary of the vocabulary, grammar, cultural topics, and language skills covered.
Immerse your Students in Real-World Language with Fotoroman
The Fotoroman storyline 24-episode video series takes students on a cultural journey as they follow the adventures of four students studying in Berlin, Germany. This engaging resource is seamlessly integrated into the curriculum, providing students with a real-world context for language use. It also deepens their understanding of social and cultural norms, allowing them to explore the rich heritage of the German-speaking world.
Practice Vocabulary via illustrations and Kommunikation activities
Full-page illustrations introduce high-frequency vocabulary to help students grasp vocabulary terms, and come to life in "hotspot" activities online. In Kommunikation, discourse-level prompts encourage the creative use of vocabulary in interactions with a partner, a small group, or the entire class.
Authentic Media to Bring Language and Culture to Life
Zapping presents TV commercials from the German-speaking world, and includes post-viewing activities to check comprehension. A TV clip appears in the first lesson of each chapter (kapitel) up to Chapter 9. Kurzfilm in the first lesson of chapters 10 to 12 features short films from contemporary German-speaking filmmakers. Through Zapping and Kurzfilm, students can experience and reflect on cultural experiences beyond their own.
Interactive Grammar Tutorials to Review Key German Concepts
These engaging tutorials presented by The Professor combine grammar rules with entertaining explanations, capturing students' attention while providing valuable learning in a low-stakes environment. Quick-checks are included to assess comprehension and offer immediate feedback, and grammar practice tests with diagnostics are also included. These activities provide students with an opportunity to build confidence and solidify understanding at their own pace. This makes it possible for instructors to use class time for more meaningful, contextualized, and communicative language practice.
Video Virtual Chats for Conversational Skills Practice
Video Virtual Chat activities provide students opportunities to participate in simulated conversations by responding to questions delivered by video recordings of native speakers. Students benefit from non-verbal as well as articulatory cues—essential for production and pronunciation. Video Virtual Chats allow students to practice their conversation skills without the need for a live partner.
